Self-awareness in adults and children refers to the ability to notice and observe thoughts, sensations, and feelings. It gives us an opportunity to recognize that our experiences, thoughts, and feelings are part of our experiences but do not define who we are.
Self-awareness can be explored through present-moment awareness, body awareness, and breath awareness. Mindfulness practices can encourage a greater connection between body and mind and create opportunities to slow down, notice, and reconnect with ourselves.
Self-awareness is an important part of personal well-being and can encourage confidence, clarity, focus, reflection, and mindful connection.
The advent of technology has transformed how we communicate and experience our daily lives. For children especially, creating opportunities to step away from screens and engage with their surroundings can be valuable.
Present-moment activities can give children opportunities to notice their environment, explore their senses, connect with their bodies, and engage with the people around them.
Adults and children can cultivate self-awareness through short mindfulness practices throughout the day. These practices don’t need to be complicated or time-consuming. They can be incorporated into activities that are already part of everyday life.
Make mindfulness practices enjoyable, engaging, and relatable by incorporating activities such as running, hiking, walking, yoga, arts and crafts, music, breathing exercises, guided relaxation, gardening, and more.
Self-awareness can also encourage us to notice how we experience everyday situations and how we connect with ourselves and others. When we make time to pause and notice, we create opportunities for reflection, connection, and personal growth.
